WINFIELD - Holy Trinity Catholic senior Collin Thornton is playing some of his best golf of the year at the perfect time.
The three-sport athlete qualified for state district golf action with a 90 in Winfield on Friday to finish 9th on the day and advance to Thursday's district action at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City.
Thornton carded a 46 on the front including an 8 on a difficult par 5 second hole at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Winfield. But he rebounded on the back nine for a 44 including two pars, one on 17 and the other on 12 to lead the Crusaders who had 397 points total on the day.
Junior Josh Barr shot a 95 and tied Thornton with a 44 on the back nine, but shot a 51 on the front nine. Junior Kyle Bredemeyer finished with a 97. Mason Holvoet shot a 115 to round out the top four for HTC, which are used to calculate team scores. Conrad Hellman carded a 123 and Brandon Delaney shot a 135 for HTC.
Winfield's Kaleb Hagge shot a 74 on his home course to win medalist honors and New London's Caleb Phillips shot a 75 for runner-up.
