Our beloved mother, Ramona M. Alvarez, 85, of Dade City, Florida, formerly of Lomax, Illinois, was called to Heaven Thursday, April 20, 2023 at her daughter’s home in West Burlington, Iowa.
 
Ramona was born December 20, 1937 in Villa Nueva, Texas, the daughter of Juan and Gavina (Lucio) Maldonado. On January 12, 1959 she married J. Frank Alvarez in Brownsville, Texas. He preceded her in death February 20, 1979.
 
Mrs. Alvarez began working at an early age at a shrimp packing factory in Port Elizabeth, Texas. She and her husband moved to Lomax, where she resided for 12 years, raising her family and working for the Lomax Canning Factory.  They later moved to the Dade City, Florida area. She was an active member of the Primera Iglesia Cristiana Hispana Discipulos De Cristo in Dade City.
 
Survivors include her six beloved children: Elizabeth Barrientes, Nina Alvarez both of Dade City, Francisco (Gracie) Alvarez of Bloomington, Texas, Juan (Maria Magdelena Alvarez) Alvarez of Aransas Pass, Texas,  Silvia (Dave Bundy) Pruvis of West Burlington, Iowa, and Noemi Thompson of Burlington, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter and one brother: Robert Maldonado of Homestead, Florida. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Frank; two great-grandchildren; two sisters and two brothers.
 
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2023 at Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois, with her son, Juan Alvarez, officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
