Donald Wayne Deck, 86, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023 at The Kensington in Fort Madison. He was born on August 17, 1936, in Keokuk, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters. He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1955. In 1960 he graduated from Carthage College with a B.S. degree. He received his master’s degree from Truman State University in 1970. He married Shirley A. Sullivan on June 5, 1970 in Keokuk, IA. During his 33 years of teaching, he taught sixth grade at Richardson Elementary and eighth grade American History and civics at Fort Madison Junior High. He retired in 1995.
He enjoyed contributing political editorials to the local newspapers and was a movie expert. He liked most Iowa sports, basketball, football and wrestling. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Washington Commanders, and he admired Caitlin Clark of the University of Iowa.
He served in the U.S. Army. In retirement he enjoyed socializing with many special friends, especially at Hy-Vee. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley, and two children, Devin and Shannon. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Daniel, Chloe, Catalina, Catriona, Adelaine, and Dainen.
Don would like to leave you with these final words: When I get to the end of the road and the sun sets on me, remember the love and good times we shared through the years. For family, friends, and former students, that will help you remember me.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2023 at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA with Pastor James Kannenberg officiating.
