Lois Jean Shuman, 65, of Keokuk, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in Burlington, Iowa.

Lois was born on March 4, 1958, in Covington, Kentucky, the daughter of Jennings Bryan and Dorthy (Rhodes) Thurman. She was united in marriage to Joseph “Joe” Shuman in Las Vegas, Nevada. He survives.

Lois was employed as a Physical Therapy Assistant at Montebello Healthcare Center in Hamilton, Illinois. She loved the great outdoors and enjoyed fishing, collecting geodes and mushroom hunting. She loved helping others and volunteered for the City of Christmas and the Keokuk Racers Reunion.

Lois is survived by her husband Joe Shuman of Keokuk; her son Cheyenne Mewes of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; her grandson Braden Jennings Mewes of Mt. Pleasant; five sisters: Judy (David) Quimby of Fairfield, Ohio; Teresa Mason of Warsaw, Illinois; Eva (Mike Boley) Thurman of Warsaw; Karen Humphrey of Keokuk, Iowa; and Annie (Wade) Kehler of Hamilton; three brothers: Tony Thurman of Cincinnati, Ohio; Roger (Sharon) Thurman of Warsaw; and Stanley Thurman of Peoria, Illinois; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Steve Thurman.

A memorial service will be held at 12 pm (noon) on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home in Keokuk, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation will be held from 10 am to 12 pm (Noon) on Wednesday at the funeral home directly before the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, City of Christmas and Keokuk Racers Reunion.
