Barr Memorial Chapel obituary – Floyd E Cowles, 92, Fort Madison

Floyd E Cowles, 92 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 2:50 pm Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa.  He was born May 1, 1932, a son of Hilbert Sr. and Mary (Marsh) Cowles.  On July 31, 1960, he married Elizabeth “Betty” VanHyning at the Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ, Denmark, Iowa.  They had two sons, Dirk and Jon.  
 
Floyd was a 1950 graduate of Fort Madison High School.  He was proud of his service in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War.  After the war he attended and graduated from the University of Iowa.  He taught in Washington, Iowa and Pleasant Valley, Iowa, before returning to Fort Madison where he taught Spanish and English until his retirement in 1994.  
 
He is survived by his wife, Betty Cowles; one son Jon Cowles of Fort Madison; a daughter-in-law Teri Cowles of St. Joseph, Missouri; three siblings: Hilbert “Gil” (Dotty) Cowles Jr of Fort Madison; and Darlene Kraus and Nancy (Jack) Hobbs, both of Iowa City, Iowa; two grandsons, Logan Cowles and Matthew (Melissa) Cowles; three great grandchildren: Emma, Atticus, and Caden; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Dirk Cowles, three siblings: Clarence Cowles, Alice Jane Groene and Edith Smith.
 
Visitation will be held from 12:00 (noon) - 1:00 pm Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at the Barr Memorial Chapel.  His funeral service will follow and begin at 1:00 pm at the funeral home, with Pastor Les Featheringill officiating.  Burial with military rites will be at Denmark Cemetery, Denmark, Iowa.  A memorial has been established for the Denmark Fire and Rescue or PAW Animal Shelter.  Barr Memorial Chapel is honored to serve the Cowles family and an online guest book may be found at www.barrmemorialchapel.com.
