Carl “Junie” Weirather, Jr., 91, of Montrose, IA passed away December 12, 2023 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Ft. Madison, IA.

He was born April 28, 1932 the son of Carl Joseph, Sr. and Mabel Elston Weirather.  He graduated from Montrose High School with the class of 1950.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War.

On December 18, 1955, Carl was united in marriage to Janet Van Ausdall at the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk.  She survives. They were married six days shy of 68 years.

Other survivors include two sons,  Lane Weirather (Nadine) of Montrose, IA and Paul Weirather (Cathy) of Montrose, IA, four grandchildren, Sara Newton (Chase) of Keokuk, Megan Warneke  (Nick) of West Point, IA, Wesley Weirather (Meijia) of Jacksonville, FL and Waylon Weirather of Montrose, IA and six great-grandchildren, Caedon, Drake, Kennedy Newton and Ellie, Lily and Bode Warneke.  He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Weirather (Judy) of Quincy, IL and Garry Weirather (Sarah) of Quincy, IL and one sister-in-law, Deanna Weirather of Montrose, IA. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Donna Elschlager and Betty Phelp, one brother, Larry Weirather, one brother-in-law, John Phelp and one great-granddaughter, Sydney Newton.

Carl worked with his dad, Carl Sr., and his two uncles, Lee and Jack Weirather, in their family construction business for many years.  He then began his own construction business and built many homes in Southeast Iowa through the years.  As a young man, Carl also farmed and raised livestock.

He was a longtime and dedicated member of the Montrose Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the Montrose Ball Association.

Carl was an outdoorsman at heart and enjoyed deer hunting and fox hunting in his younger years and gardening into his later years.  He was known for his great sense of humor and his tireless work ethic.  His grandchildren were the greatest joy in his life and he was a faithful fan of all their sporting events.     Visitation will be held after 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at the funeral home with the family present from 5-7 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor John Abraham officiating.  Burial will be in the Montrose Cemetery in Montrose, IA.

Memorials may be made to the Montrose Ball Association.  Checks may be made to the City of Montrose Youth Activities Commission.
