Mary E. Baxter Logan, 98, of Nauvoo, Illinois, passed away at 6:13 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2022, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.
She was born on February 25, 1924, the daughter of Fred K. and Dorothy O. (Kelly) Baxter.
Survivors include one daughter: Kris (Gary) Shanks of Nauvoo, Illinois; one son: Kelly (Brenda) Logan of Nauvoo, Illinois; two grandchildren: Eric (Becky) Shanks of Wauconda, Illinois and Kim Logan of Nauvoo, Illinois; three great grandchildren: Logan, Annabelle and Eleanor. Also surviving are one brother Fred and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; one son: Larry; two sisters: Elizabeth (Betty) and Annette (Bidy).
Mary was a lifelong resident of Nauvoo. She graduated in 1941 from Sts. Peter & Paul School. In 1945 she graduated from St. Teresa College in Winona, Minnesota, with a degree in Education. She taught at Macomb High School and Nauvoo-Colusa High School; teaching English, History and was a District Librarian. She retired in 1984, after 31 years. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Catholic Womens Club, the Nauvoo American Legion, the Nauvoo Icarian Heritage Society, the Nauvoo Historical Society and the Nauvoo Grape Festival Association from 1952 to 1984. In 1989, Mary was the Grand Marshal of the Nauvoo Grape Festival Parade. She was a step-on bus guide for the City of Nauvoo. Mary loved Nauvoo history, geneology, playing cards, puzzles and reading.
Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2022, at the Schmitz Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Nauvoo.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2022, in the Nauvoo City Cemetery with Father Tony Trosley officiating.
A memorial has been established in her memory for Friends of the Library or Nauvoo Food Pantry.
