Barr Memorial Chapel obituary – Esther Brooks, 95, Fort Madison

Esther Brooks, 95 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died Thursday, January 5, 2023 at her home.  She was born January 16, 1927 in Argyle, Iowa, a daughter of Dwight HV and Bertha (Crowson) Dawson.  She married Jesse Theodore Brooks, Jr. on July 10, 1948 in Farmington, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on January 2, 2016. 

She was a 1945 graduate of Argyle High School.  She was an accounting clerk for 16 years at Chevron Chemical, retiring in 1984.  She was a member of Holy Spirit Baptist Church.  Esther enjoyed music.  She was a proud member of Sweet Adaline’s Port City Pearls.  She was an accomplished pianist, and played for her church and accompanied her husband, Jesse.  She was an avid Cardinals fan, a wonderful cook, and loved spending time with her family.              

Esther is survived by three children: Ted Brooks of Fort Madison; Estine Wilson of Goldsboro, North Carolina and Rosann (Richard) Nelson of Fort Madison; two siblings, Leo Dawson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Vivian (Bill) Smith of St. Charles, Missouri;  several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one great great grandson; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons-in-law, William Wilson and Garry Thomas, four siblings: Chester, Edith, Marceine, and Nellie and one grandson.

Visitation will be 9:30 - 11:00 am Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.  The funeral service for Mrs. Brooks will follow and begin at 11:00 am on January 14,   2023 at the Barr Memorial Chapel with Reverend Bartlett Wilkerson officiating.  A private burial will be Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison at a later date.  A memorial has been established, contributions may be left at Barr Memorial Chapel.  Barr Memorial Chapel is honored to serve the Brooks family and an online guest book may be found at www.barrmemorialchapel.com.
