Crusaders rack up eight wins with mostly underclassmen

BUSSEY – The Holy Trinity Catholic softball team wrapped up a season where they punched above their weight class for eight wins as Twin Cedars ended the girls' season with a 12-0 win Friday night in Bussey, Iowa.
The Crusaders were coming off an emotional win over Winfield Mt. Union Wednesday night at home that went nine innings before HTC ripped off three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 10-9 win over the Wolves.
On Friday, the Crusaders got just a single from Sydney Jarvis to lead off the second inning with the Crusaders already down 10-0. Kat DiPrima got hit by a pitch with two outs in the inning to put two runners on, but Ellie Helman, the hero of Wednesday night’s win, grounded into a fielder’s choice at third where Jarvis was forced.
The Sabers' senior hurler Jenny French then shut down HTC in the third inning with two strikeouts and a flyout to right field.
Twin Cedars would put up two more without recording an out in the bottom of the 3rd to invoke the 12-run rule and end Holy Trinity’s season.
The Crusaders finished the year 8-12, with the second-most wins the program has had since its restart in 2020 after eight years without a program.
Aside from junior Emily Ross, who led the Crusaders in hitting on the season at a .519 clip, HTC was built with seven freshmen, three sophomores, and one incoming freshman Morgan Krogmeier, who hit .306 and helped anchor the infield at second base. Ross had two homeruns on the year and led the team with 19 RBIs. Jarvis had the other homerun for Holy Trinity and handled most of the pitching duties. She pitched in all 18 games racking up a 5.16 ERA with a 7-8 record. Hellman, Ross, and Krogmeier also saw time in the circle for the Crusaders.
