Program aims to curb illegal sales of alcohol, tobacco and nicotine

Posted

LEE COUNTY - The overall goal of The Best You Coalition’s Merchant Training is to increase voluntary compliance with the state's alcohol/nicotine/tobacco laws through education and enforcement.
The core objective of the program is to prevent illegal sales of alcohol/nicotine/tobacco products by educating sellers and increasing awareness of changes in Iowa's laws.
The training content focuses on key identifying elements of the latest format of Iowa/Illinois/Missouri driver's licenses, but also includes information on the previous versions of licenses and identification cards.
The training covers the Iowa Code, valid forms of identification, and how to spot altered and fake IDs. The program focuses on preventing underage sales and sales to intoxicated patrons. Participants will learn techniques for refusing the sale of alcohol/nicotine/tobacco products with minimal confrontation and how to legally confiscate an altered or fake ID. The training also includes regulations and tips for offsite delivery of alcohol/nicotine/tobacco products.
Merchant Training is for all individuals who sell alcohol/nicotine/tobacco products for on-or-off-premises consumption, as well as holders of retail licenses. However, anyone who is interested may take the training.
Merchant Training is comprehensive in-person training that lasts about two hours. There is no cost to attend, and training is offered every other month. Attendees of Merchant Training receive a certificate of completion that is valid for two years.
Merchant Training was created for the following reasons:

  • Helping to keep those under the age of 21 in Lee County to not use alcohol/nicotine/tobacco products.
  • Educating retailers and licensees in Lee County to not sell/serve alcohol/nicotine/tobacco products to those under the age of 21.
  • Aid Law Enforcement in enforcing Iowa alcohol/tobacco/nicotine laws.
  • Aid local government in adding, expanding, and changing current policies and ordinances.
