FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison YMCA is reminding parents that they have preschool openings and have a set an open house to introduce parents and caregivers to the program.
The open house is set for Aug. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the YMCA at 220 26th Street.
“People can stop in and get information and see the classroom,” said coordinator Emily Hymes.
“They can meet us and, if they have interest, we can get them enrolled at that time.”
YMCA Executive Director Ryan Wilson said there are limited spots in the morning and plenty of spots left in the afternoon session, but the program is free to Iowa residents and a YMCA membership is not required.
The programs are for four-year olds and children who will be four by Sept. 15, 2024.
Wilson said transportation options have changed with the Fort Madison Community School District, which has created opportunities with the YMCA.
“We are now once again a drop-off and pick-up location for students who ride the bus,” he said. “Things have changed in the district with regard to bussing and we are now on their route again.”
He said that development may also produce some additional before and after-school programs, but conversations are still ongoing about the potential of those added programs.
The preschool programs during school hours feature swimming, recreation, field trips, and other programs, Hymes said.
The morning session, which is nearing capacity, is from 8:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., while the afternoon session runs from 12:45 to 3:15 p.m.. Drop-off for the afternoon session starts at 12:30 p.m.
Class sizes are limited to 20.
“We are nearing that in the morning. Afternoon class is where we’re struggling,” Hymes said. “They can reach out to me at Emily.hymes@fortmadisony.org or can call at 319-372-2403 ext. 4.”
This is 10th year the YMCA has hosted the preschool program and it has always been in partnership with the public school district.
