Police arrest suspect in last week's search

Burgand arrested at home southwest of city Tuesday.

FORT MADISON - The suspect of a multi-jurisdictional search last week, has been taken into custody by the Fort Madison Police Tuesday afternoon.
According to a release from Fort Madison Police Chief Mark Rohloff, Dakota William Burgund, 34, of Fort Madison was apprehended at a residence southwest of the city limits at about 12:50 p.m..
Burgund was the subject of a Lee County CrimeStoppers posting concerning a previous apprehension attempt a week earlier.
Burgund had been sought by the Lee County Narcotics Task Force on drug charges when spotted by Fort Madison officers, leading them on a high-speed chase before abandoning his car in rural Lee County. A manhunt ensued, with the subject successfully evading deputies, a
police K-9 unit, and a drone.
Today’s arrest was successfully culminated with the assistance of the US Marshall’s Service, Fort Madison Police Detectives, and the Lee County Narcotics Task Force.
Burgund is charged with multiple felonies to include controlled substance violations; a drug tax stamp violation; felony eluding; reckless driving; possession of drug paraphernalia; and numerous traffic violations. He is currently held pending arraignment at the Lee County Jail.
The public is reminded that charges are an accusation of a criminal act, and that persons arrested are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.
