Lady Hounds win low scoring affair at MP

Foul trouble keeps game under 43 points

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Fort Madison girls outlasted Mt. Pleasant in a very low scoring affair Friday on the Panthers' court.

The Lady Hounds and Panthers combined for just 43 points in a game where Fort Madison came away with a 24-19 Southeast Conference win.

Fort Madison held the conference's leading scorer Andrea Lopreato to 11 points, just two in the first half. But the Panthers were able to hold the Lady Hounds' top scorer Camille Kruse in check most of the night as well.

Kruse, along with several Hounds players, got into foul trouble early and sat on the sidelines for awhile, according to head coach TJ Sargent.

"We had practically everyone in foul trouble. Four of our five starters picked up two fouls in the first half. Camille Kruse only played a few minutes in the first quarter, none in the second, a few minutes in the third, and then the whole fourth quarter," she said.

Kruse would finish with just five points, none in the first half.

With both teams playing very stingy defense and short-staffed, neither team was able to get going offensively, so other players stepped up.

"Irelynd, Aija, Taylor and Camille all had 2 fouls in the first half. All were sitting at some point except we had to put Aija back in for another ball handler on the floor," Sargent said.

"Dayonna Davis, Hadley Wolfe, and Halle Menke all played and stepped up. We played great defense."

Knipe led the Hounds with six points and seven rebounds. She also had six steals on the night.

Irelynd Sargent had four points, four steals and three rebounds. Taylor Johnson had three points and five boards. Dayonna Davis and Hadley Wolf each chipped in with three points.

Neither team would even get on the board until Fort Madison converted a free throw four minutes into the game. Mt. Pleasant's Tristian Shull hit a three-pointer with less than a minute left in the first period to give the Panthers a 5-4 lead going into the second quarter.

Fort Madison's defense held the Panthers to just a field goal and a free throw in the second period, while the Hounds stretched the lead to 10-8 at the half with the help of a 3-ball from Hadley Wolfe.

The third quarter again was sluggish offensively with the two teams combining for eight points. Mt. Pleasant got a 3-pointer from Lopreato, while Fort Madison put up a seven.

Mt. Pleasant would outscore Fort Madison 8-7 in the final period, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 17-11 deficit headed into the fourth.
