Lady Hounds sweep Keokuk

Girls move above .500 with wins

KEOKUK – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds got back on track in Southeast softball action with doubleheader sweep of the Chiefs sparked by a 5-run 8th inning in game 1 to break an 11-11 tie.
Elle Ruble opened the top of the eighth with a double to center. Lauryn Helmick then drew a walk before Elizabeth Tanner doubled to center driving in Ruble with what ended up being the game-winning RBI. Olivia Buckner reached and scored Helmick and then Alivia Holmes singled to left scoring Tanner for a 14-11 lead.
Taylor Johnson flew out to center for the first out before Emily Steffensmeier drew a bases-loaded walk to score Buckner.
Rehm would slap another single to short right field to score Holmes before a couple hard liners hit at the pitcher and to left field ended the inning for the Hounds.
Rehm, who went all eight innings for Fort Madison gave a double to start the bottom of the eighth, but Keokuk’s Gracie Thompson was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. After a walk to Bella Crew, Rehm got Kylie sisk and Suzie Whitaker to fly out to end the game.
Rehm gave up all 11 runs earned on 17 hits, while striking out five and walking three. She gave up two homers.
Helmick, Rehm, and Tanner all had three hits for the Bloodhounds.  Tanner had four RBI. Helmick scored four runs. Thompson suffered the loss for the Chiefs in the first game.
In the night cap, Erika Kruse held control throughout seven recording a four-hit shutout, while going 3-4 at the plate with two RBI. Steffensmeier, Tanner and Reilynn Turnbull all had two hit nights for the Hounds.
The wins move the Hounds over .500 overall on the year with a 3-5 conference record. They take on Keokuk again Thursday night at Baxter Sports Complex beginning at 7:30
