Lady Hawks come up short v. Notre Dame

Morrison scores 35 in loss to Nikes

DONNELLSON - Makayla Morrison exploded for 35 points, but the Lady Hawks couldn't catch up with Notre Dame Tuesday night.

The Class 1A No. 14 Nikes couldn't put the clamps on Morrison, especially in the 4th quarter as the Hawks scrambled back from a 9-point deficit with one-minute left to put a scare into the Nikes.

Morrison had three 3-pointers including two in the final minute, to get Central Lee within striking distance, but a 3-ball from Notre Dame's Anna Engberg kept the game just out of reach.

Kenna Sandoval had the best game of her career scoring 22 points inside with 12 coming in the second half of Central's comeback.

Notre Dame led by just one point at the end of the first quarter at 10-9, but Notre Dame erupted for 24 in the second quarter to take a 38-28 lead into the lockerroom.

The Lady Hawks would close that gap to just one point 54-53 to start the final period. The two teams traded buckets throughout the final period, but Notre Dame went on a small 7-0 run at the two minute mark to create enough room to hold on for the win.

Kodi Moeller had five points in the win.

The Hawks (1-3, 1-2) travel to Van Buren on Friday night for girls/boys doubleheader.
