CEDAR RAPIDS – The Holy Trinity Catholic girls made the most of their trip to Cedar Rapids to play at Mt. Mercy College Monday night.
The Crusaders worked up an 8-0 shutout over Hillcrest Academy for their fourth win in a row.
Senior Mary Hellige went the distance allowing just two hits in the shut out. She struck out six and didn’t allow a walk in the game.
She also went 2-4 for at the plate with 2 RBI in the win. Kayla Box went 2-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Brooke Mueller, Haile Cain, Sydney Jarvis, and Rachel Menke all had hits for the Crusaders.
Emmalyn Snaadt got things going when she advanced to third on a dropped 3rd strike and a throwing error in the third inning. Cain would ground out to the pitcher for the second out, but Snaadt was quick enough to get in to score. Box was plunked in the next at bat and stole second. Hellige drove her in with a single to left before a flyout ending the threat.
HTC got three more in the fifth all with two outs. Cain tripled and Box both singled for an RBI. Hellige doubled down the left field line to score another run and then Mueller followed up with a double to left to score Hellige for a 5-0 lead.
Fort Madison would add one in the sixth and two more insurance runs in the seventh to get the win and move to 8-9 on the year and to even .500 at 5-5.
They host New London tonight at South Park in a 7 p.m. game, and Wapello Wednesday night. They wrap up the week with a game at Van Buren County.
