HTC girls start year 2-0

Freshman providing glimpse of future for Lady Crusaders

Posted

FORT MADISON – The Holy Trinity Catholic softball team has started the year 2-0 and will try to extend that streak to 3-0 with a home game tonight against Van Buren.
The Lady Crusaders are playing with seven freshmen and one incoming freshman, three sophomores, and just one senior, but have managed a 12-0 shutout over Danville to start the season Tuesday, and then scored a 6-1 win over New London on Thursday night.
Danville and New London are a combined 0-8 on the year, but that doesn’t diminish the efforts of freshman Sydney Jarvis who’s surrendered just one run earned on four hits in the two starts. Her shutout against Danville on Tuesday was also a no-hitter.
Jarvis also went 4-for-4 Thursday with two runs scored and an RBI, two doubles, and a stolen base. Sophomore Emily Hellman was 3 of 5 in the New London win with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Crusaders trailed 1-0 after two innings but put up two runs in the top of the third, both on wild pitches, to take the lead for good as Jarvis shut things down for the Lady Tigers from that point. Holy Trinity would add three runs in the top of the sixth and finished with 12 hits on the night.
On Tuesday Jarvis went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored. She also struck out three in just three innings of work as the game was called at the end of three innings under the 12-run mercy rule.
Freshman Elizabeth Griffin was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. The Crusaders put up six runs in the first inning and three each in the second and third. Freshman Brooklyn Todd scored three runs. Incoming freshman Morgan Krogmeier was 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored in the win.
The Crusaders are 2-0 on the year and 2-0 on SEI Superconference play currently tied for first with West Burlington (4-0, 2-0).
