FORT MADISON – Tucked back among the piles of rebar and other construction materials on the east side of the Fort Madison High School, the Bloodhound boys tennis team quietly notched their first win of the season.

The Hounds knocked off visiting Keokuk 4-2 in a short-handed affair for both teams.

Fort Madison’s Aidan Benda fell at No. 1 singles to Keokuk’s Brandon Worster 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but the Hounds took the next three singles matches and the No. 1 doubles match to get the win.

Javean Davis defeated Jaxton McNally 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Jed Bruster knocked off Raden Meier 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. James Janic then downed Kole Keppel, 6-0, 6-0 to give Fort Madison a 3-1 advantage headed into doubles play.

Benda and Davis then used a 10-6 tiebreaker to seal the win at No. 1 doubles. Keokuk’s Worster and Meier won the first set 7-5, but then Benda and Davis came back in the second set 6-3 to force the tie breaker.

McNally and Keppel then took the No. 2 doubles 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

“It was good to see the boys put together the fundamentals that they’ve learned in practice and carry that over into a game,” said Head Coach Dean Hogan.

“Benda and Davis really played well in their doubles match. They did a really nice job of working together and played well at the net.”

The Hounds play host to Burlington Notre Dame on Thursday.
