FORT MADISON – After spinning off three out of four wins last week, the Fort Madison Bloodhounds’ baseball team dropped two at home to Burlington in a doubleheader Monday night.
The Hounds fell in the opener 16-4 and then were shut out in the nightcap 0-8 to drop to 4-7 in Southeast Conference play and 8-13 overall.
Kane Williams sparked the Hounds in the opener with a couple RBIs in the fifth inning with Fort Madison trailing 12-0.  Williams doubled to left scoring Brody Cashman and Brennan Ulik, but Caden Barnes grounded out to short to end the inning.
Burlington would add four more in the top of the sixth on doubles by Hunter Ford and Josh Zahner before Fort Madison’s Tateum Schelich came on in relief and got out of the inning.
Schelich would score the final Fort Madison run of the game on a sac fly by Luke Hellige. Aidan Pennock would single and Cashman would walk with two outs, but a strikeout ended the first game of the doubleheader.
Hunter Cresswell suffered the loss for Fort Madison going 4 2/3 giving up 12 runs, eight earned on 15 hits while striking out eight and walking two.
Mateo Lozano pitched an out in relief and Schelich threw an inning giving up three runs, two earned on three hits and a strikeout.
In the night cap, the Grayhounds' Tyler Schwartz went the distance giving up just two hits over seven innings while fanning nine and walking two.
Burlington put up three runs in the second and fourth innings and a run each in the third and fifth. They outhit the Bloodhounds five to two in a strong pitching duel, but Fort Madison’s four errors proved to be too much to overcome.
Pennock, Aiden Mitchell, and Williams combined to give up just five hits and eight runs, only three earned, in the affair.
Williams and Ulik had the only hits, both singles for the Hounds.
Fort Madison is off until Wednesday when they host Muscatine, and then Thursday when they travel to Community Field in Burlington to take on the Grayhounds again.
