Fort Madison girls take team title at Urbandale

URBANDALE - The Fort Madison Lady Hounds are quickly earning a reputation for success just two years into the squad's program.
The Hounds took the team title Saturday at the Urbandale Invitational, claiming three individual titles.
At 120 lbs. Mara Smith, who qualified for the IGHSAU state tournament last season, captured first place Saturday going 5-0 at the invitational, all five wins coming by fall. Smith wrestled at 113 last season. Only two of three matches went into the second period, while the sophomore moves to 9-0 on the year.
Smith’s best match may have come in round four where she won over Southern Tier’s Lacey Reed (6-2) by fall at 3:37 p.m
At 135 lbs. Kat DiPrima, wrestling in the shared Hound program from HTC, went 5-0 to capture that weight title crown. DiPrima got to the title match with four straight pins, including a fall just 16 seconds into the match with Saige Kern of Dallas Center-Grimes. DiPrima won by medical forfeit over Benton’s Jordan Voelkel for the championship.
Wrestling at 170 lbs., Fort Madison’s Sadie Brandon, who just missed qualifying for the state meet last year, went 5-0 with four pins after receiving a first-round bye. Two of her falls were less than one minute and she knocked off Dallas Center-Grimes’ Aubrey Borchending by fall in 1:38.
Hailey Kemper 5-1 finished second after falling in the 1st place match to Indianola’s Siera Baker by fall at the 1:36 mark. Up to that point Kemper was 2-0 after receiving a first round bye. Kemper now stands at 5-1 on the season.
Chloe Sokolik at 130 lbs. also earned a second-place finish going 2-0 after a first-round bye. She fell to Dallas Center-Grimes’ Asia Jahangir (6-0) by a pin at 2:37. Sokolik falls to 6-1 on the year.
Mady Emmett was the other Bloodhound with a second-place finish wrestling at 155 lbs.  Emmett recorded four pins to advance her to the title match, but was pinned in the first period by Emmalee Spurgeon of Pella (7-0). Emmett falls to 6-1.
