FORT MADISON - The FMAAA Art Center hosts the Tri-State Quilt Guild for August along with Prints in the Pop-up.
The FMAAA Art Center welcomes the Tri State Quilt Guild for August. Every two years Fort Madison is treated to an exhibit that has roots in historic handcraft but has transcended into modern design. Everyone is welcome join us this Thursday, August 6 for the Opening Reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Main Gallery of the art center located at 825 Avenue G and meet some of the quilters as these ladies share their full-sized quilts and quilted items for this month-long exhibit. There are an amazing range of designs and a variety of techniques to see – and all are candidates to become treasured heirlooms. The Tri-State Quilt Guild was organized in 1990 and currently has eighteen members ranging in ages from thirteen to somewhere past retirement who meet up regularly to “sew and tell.” Some are hand quilters while others are skilled at long-arm quilting. This group is always open to new members who are interested in learning more about quilting, all are welcome novice through skilled.
While many of the quilts on display at the Art Center are for exhibition only, some pieces are indeed for sale this year. Proceeds allow the Tri-State Quilt Guild to purchase supplies for the small blankets they make and provide to Lee County Human Services in Keokuk and foster children throughout the area, along with other charity efforts the Guild likes to support. We thank Fort Madison Area Arts Association members Carol and John Janosik for their generous sponsorship of this exhibit. The quilts are on display through Aug. 31. There will be a luncheon and Gallery talk with some of the quilters on Friday, August 23rd at noon. The lunch costs $10per person. Reservations are recommended if you intend to each lunch. Otherwise feel free to come for the Gallery Talk which begins at approximately 12:40 p.m. to learn more about the quilting processes and enjoy some good conversation. Later that evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., everyone is welcome to FINALE, a performance evening in the Main Gallery with music by Joe Sanford.
The Pop-up Gallery in the FMAAA Art Center is currently hosting an exhibit of Prints by local artist Patrick Bohenkamp now through August 20th. Bohenkamp’s work is fresh and surprising. Each print is unique and will not be part of a run. The prints he has installed invite a closer look and touches the imagination. Come experience the organic quality of his work and examine the journey he is taking with his very unique printing process.
