WASHINGTON – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds got back in the win column after a rough week last week with a doubleheader sweep of Washington on the road in a Southeast Conference matchup Monday night.
The Hounds won the opener 14-10 behind Reece Huey’s solid 3 2/3. The incoming freshman gave up just one run earned on five hits walking one and striking out none. With one out, Huey surrendered a single to junior Mason Morgan and then junior Conner Leydon doubled to center scoring Morgan. Leydon would get thrown out for the second out trying to stretch the hit into a triple. Huey would get the next hitter to ground out to second to force extra innings.
Fort Madison would put up a four-spot in the top of the 9th. Aiden Mitchell would reach on an error at third and Caden Barnes would drive a ball into left for a double, moving both runners into scoring position.
Ames Schinstock would sacrifice to left to score Mitchell. Brody Cashman would get plunked and then would swipe second with Barnes holding the throw at third. Huey would work a walk before Hunter Cresswell grounded into a fielder’s choice, getting Huey at second. Barnes would score on the play and Cashman advanced to third base.
Hellige would then walk with two outs and an error at third allowed Schelich to reach base and Cashman to score the final run of the game.
Huey would get the first two hitters in the bottom of the ninth out, but then surrender back-to-back singles before getting a foul popout to end the game.
Hellige went 4-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs. He reached base all six times at the plate with a couple walks figured into the at-bats. Huey, Mitchell, and Cresswell each scored three runs. Huey was 2-5 with 3 RBIs.
In the nightcap, Cresswell got the win for the Hounds going 4 1/3 allowing just one run earned on two hits while fanning eight and walking four. The senior also had an RBI single. Cashman led the Hounds at the plate going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Fort Madison put up a run in the top of the 1st and four more in the second to set the tone early. Schinstock had a 2-RBI single. Cashman would drive in a run with a no-out single and Barnes would score on a wild pitch to give Fort Madison a 5-0 lead after two. Luke Beenblossom singled in the Demons' only run in the bottom of the third with two outs.
