Fiery crash sends two to hospital

Truck smashed into home catching both on fire early Saturday

FORT MADISON – An early morning accident Saturday resulted in a fiery crash that injured two and destroyed a home.
According to Fort Madison Fire officials, LeeComm dispatched the Montrose Fire Department and Des Moines Township Fire to 6010 Avenue O at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday for a vehicle that had struck a home.
As a result of the collision, a fire ignited that involved the vehicle and the structure. A Lee County Sheriff’s deputy arrived on scene and said two individuals in the vehicle had been removed. However, it was unknown whether anyone was in the home at the time. The sheriff’s deputy requested mutual aid from Fort Madison Fire & Rescue due to the unknown occupancy of the structure.
Power was also affected on the west end of Fort Madison due to the accident.
Fort Madison fire was called at 12:34 a.m. and arrived on scene about six minutes later. Upon arrival, the vehicle and the structure were fully engulfed in flames and an all-call of off-duty firefighters was requested.
Also upon arrival it was determined that two occupants of the home had escaped the burning structure and were reportedly uninjured. Montrose Fire and Des Moines Township fire arrived on scene and the West Point Fire Department was called for mutual aid.
Assisting that scene were Alliant Energy, Lee County Sheriff, and Fort Madison Public Works.
The structure and the vehicle are both considered to be total losses. Both the occupants of the vehicle were transported to SEI Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries. The names of those injured was released, according to Fort Madison FD Lieutenant Chad Hannum.
Crews left the scene and returned to service at 3:05.48. According to Beacon-Schneider, the property was purchased in 2021 by David Wilson for $37,600.
