Central Lee boys finding some momentum

Wyrick hits for 22 in win over Columbus

DONNELLSON - Sophomore Brayden Wyrick had an early Christmas gift for the Hawks Monday night.

Central Lee's post player scored 22 working inside to lead the Hawks to a 68-46 win over Columbus at the Hawks' gym.

The win is the second in a row for the Central Lee boys who got a win in the River Rivalry Saturday in Keokuk over Brookfield, Mo.

The Hawks opened with a 10-2 run and and led by four at the end of the first quarter. Wyrick had eight of the Hawks' first 12 points.  Chase Johnson had a couple buckets inside for the other 1st quarter scoring.

Corbin Pohren and Cory Jones converted three-pointers in the second quarter to help the Hawks hold a slim lead, but Columbus battled back and outscored the hosts 15-12 in the quarter to trail by just one 24-23 at the half.

That one-point lead would hold through the third quarter. The Hawks had an 11-point lead with two minutes left in the quarter before Columbus went on an 8-3 run to close the gap to one at 41-40 going into the fourth.

Central Lee's defense stepped up in the fourth and held Columbus to just six points the rest of the way, while freshman Owen Swan, who finished with 14 points on the night, put the game away with three fourth-quarter 3-balls to help the Hawks seal the win.

Pohren and Jones both had  11 points on the night. Wyrick cleaned 13 rebounds to lead Central Lee. Pohren had six boards and four steals in the win.

The Hawks are now 2-7 on the year and still winless in the SEI Superconference at 0-6. They are off until Jan. 6 when they travel to Holy Trinity Catholic,

Wyrick has scored 142 points on the season and is in third place in the SEISC South. He currently leads the conference in rebounding with 77.
