Lady Hawks fall at No. 8 Washington

Seven-run fourth dooms upset-minded Central Lee

WASHINGTON - The Central Lee Hawks gave Class 3A No. 8 Washington a good run through three innings, but surrendered a seven-run fourth and another three runs in the bottom of the fifth to set the 10-run rule at 12-2 in girls softball action.
Central Lee scored a run in the top of the first and again in the top of the third, while giving up two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-2 tie after three. Kenna Sandoval singled with two outs to drive in Shanna Buford who had reached on an error in the first.
Bella Salazar doubled on a 2-2 pitch to left field in the bottom of the first scoring Leighton Salazar and Ella Greiner to take a 2-1 lead.
Lady Hawks starter Jayln Hawk got a groundout, a fielder’s choice, and a strikeout to end the inning.
In the top of the third, incoming freshman Sara Young singled to start things off. She was moved over on a sacrifice bunt and then Carlee Pezley singled moving courtesy runner Kamryn Cox to third.
Cox was called out on an interference call before Buford tripled to center scoring Pezley to tie things up. The Demons intentionally passed Kenna Sandoval before a flyout ended the inning.
Washington found some momentum in the fourth after Hawk got the first batter out. Back-to-back walks and a single loaded the bases with one out. A passed ball would bring one run in. Another walk would bring in another run and then a Bella Salazar single scored two more runs.  An error would allow another run and an RBI single would make it an 8-2 game. A fielder’s choice plated the seventh run for a 9-2 lead.
Central Lee would put two on in the fifth before a double play and a ground out killed the threat.
The No. 14 Hawks knocked off Hillcrest Academy 16-0 in four innings Wednesday after a slight rain delay.  They take on Holy Trinity in a doubleheader Thursday night in Donnellson.
