MT. PLEASANT – Fort Madison will send a contingent of runners to the State Track and Field meet in Des Moines next week.
Nick Fullenkamp found another gear for a 23.55 in the open 200 at MapleLeaf Athletic Complex on Thursday night to garner 2nd place in the event and qualify for a lane at the state meet which begins on Thursday at Drake University. Fullenkamp will be seeded 24th.
Fullenkamp will run at approximately 4:40 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Lane assignments will be determined after all qualifiers have been identified on Friday at around noon.
The Fort Madison girls finished with 50 points good enough for sixth place overall. The Bloodhound boys scored a composite 85 points earning them 5th place out of eight teams. Solon won both the girls and boys district meets.
Fullenkamp also ran the third leg of the boys 800 sprint medley with Henry Wiseman, Tate Settles, and Cade Packard who finished third less than 1.8 seconds from qualifying. That time could be one of the top eight non-qualifying times in the state, which would allow them a lane at the state meet.
The Lady Hounds’ Avery Rump qualified with a 10:52.54 in the 3000 meters. She came into districts with the 11th fastest time in the state. and will be seeded 4th on Thursday. She also qualified 13th in the 1500-meter run. She will  run the 3000 Thursday at approximately 3:30 p.m and the 1500 Saturday at approximately 2:45 p.m..
Hailey Kemper qualified in the 400-meter hurdles despite her fifth place finish on Thursday. She will be seeded 20th and run at approximately 5:45 on Friday afternoon.
The Bloodhounds 4x100 and Shuttle Hurdle relay teams also qualified. That will send the 4x100 team of Adam Sobczak, Dayton Lamar, Tate Settles and Julian Dear to the blue oval after their 43.64 was 2nd best on the day. They will be seeded 13th overall  and will run in prelims Friday at about 6:40 p.m.
The Shuttle Hurdle team of Sobczak, Gavin Callahan, Kiawante Smith, and Henry Wiseman will go to Des Moines following a 1:01.57, just .98 behind Mt. Pleasant.
The shuttle hurdle team seeded 8th will run prelliminaries on Thursday at about 3:00 p.m.  Both finals are run on Saturday.
Cade Packard also qualified on time in the open 400.. He will be seeded 2nd and will run at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the finals.“The kids ran their tails off tonight,” said boys head coach Mike Schneider. “We had several PRs and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.”
Other 3rd place finishes that have a shot at qualifying outside the top two finishers in each event at each district include Cade Packard’s 52.45 open 400. The boys distance medley team was third, a full 2.5 seconds off the qualifying pace, but Schneider said Guzman’s 2:04 split on the final leg was strong.
“Wow, that kid is gonna be good. He’s a freshman.”
CENTRAL LEE:
