Smith rolls to title at Mid Prairie

Freshman runs through field at 130 lbs.

WELLMAN - Mara Smith won the 130 lb title at the girls Mid-Prairie Invitational, and seems poised to make a run in the post-season.

Smith won all three matches by a pin and was only really challenged in the title match against Wilton's Kylie Langley.

The freshman received a first round bye coming into the tournament with an 18-3 record. She then quicky dispatched Gabriella McDermott of Western Dubuque in just 40 seconds to move to the semifinals.

There Smith defeated Kylie Collins of West Liberty by fall in the first period setting up the title match with Langley. It took three periods, but Smith was able to work a Langley's shoulders to the mat with just :17 left in the match.

Freshman Hailey Kemper took second at 100 lbs. Kemper went 1-2 on the day with a first round win by fall. She lost a very close 7-6 dedision to Wilton's Audrey Cummings before losing in the final round by pin to Gabi Robertson of Mid-Prairie.

Sadie Brandon also took second place at 170 lbs. Brandon got a first round bye and then scored a pin over Destiny Boone of WACO to move to the title match.

North Scott's Abby Allen needed to get into the third period before getting Brandon's shoulder's to the mat leaving the Bloodhound sophomore with the runner-up title.

Chloe Sokolik went 2-2 at 125 lbs. to secure fifth place in her division including a pin in the semifinals.
