WEST LIBERTY – The Fort Madison Lady Hound wrestling team continued it’s hot start to the season.
Hailey Kemper and Mara Smith both took home titles at the West Liberty Invitational Monday night helping the Bloodhounds to a second-place finish. West Liberty won the event with 205 points, while the Hounds accumulated 157 on the night.
Mid-Prairie was third followed by North Scott and Tipton rounding out the top five.
Kemper breezed through the 100 lb. bracket recording three falls after receiving a first round bye. She took out North Scott’s Katelyn Buckley by fall in just 23 seconds and then battled for a period and a half before getting Alburnett’s Carly McGraw’s shoulders to the mat That put her in the title match with Highland’s Abbie Grout, who had also advanced to the finals with two byes and two pins. Kemper wrapped that up in 2:32 for the title.
Smith, wrestling a little heavier at 125, had the most exciting route to a championship. After a first-round bye the sophomore pinned Pleasant Valley’s Leah Barr in 53 seconds. She then took out host West Liberty’s Kiley Collins at 2:38 by pin.
That set up a title match with Saidee Hamilton of Tipton. Smith got the only points of the first period when she scored a takedown 31 seconds after the whistle for a 2-0- lead after one. Smith earned a penalty point to start the second period, but then Hamilton recorded a takedown and nearfall half way through the period. Smith was awarded a penalty point in the scrum and then executed a reversal with less than a minute left for a 6-3 lead going into the final period.
Smith got into some hold issues in the third period and surrendered a couple penalty points in the final period, but was awarded a point for Hamilton stalling leading to the 6-5 win and the title.
Tatum Peters advanced to the title match at 145 lbs. but was kept from the title there suffering a 37 second fall to Pleasant Valley’s Cassi Paustian.
Fort Madison got third-place finishes from Chloe Sokolik at 130 pounds and Annah Blanchard at 115.
The girls are off now until Nov. 27th when they host the Fort Madison Invitational.
