Saturday evening fire damages east side home

One dog killed, another escapes harm

FORT MADISON – A fire broke out in the 400 block of Avenue F late Saturday evening, leaving one pet dead.

LeeComm was notified of flames coming the structure at 402 Avenue F after residents in the park noticed the flames and smoke. Witness said fire appeared to be coming from the west back side of the unit.

Firefighters arrived to find the back of the structure on fire and heavy smoke coming from the home.

Fort Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren said the fire is under investigation and the value of the loss hasn’t been determined.

One dog was able to escape injury in the fire, but another dog was killed after firefighters discovered the animal and emergency crews tried resuscitation efforts.

Firefighers were called to the scene just after 8 p.m. and were on the scene for close to two hours.

The home is owned by Chad Higdon, who lives on the property but was out of town at the time of the fire. The building is valued at $137,530.

No firefighters or emergency crews were injured in the incident.
