WAPELLO - Holy Trinity took 2nd place Tuesday night at the Wapello Invitational with a clash of SEI Superpowers in the championship match.
Preseason No. 1 HTC fell to No. 8 Burlington Notre Dame 25-23, 25-21 in a match that has quickly become the best volleyball rivalry in the area.
The Lady Crusaders went 6 of 7 the rest of way through the tournament sweeping Columbus 21-11, 21-9, Central Lee 21-14, 21-13 and then needed a tie breaker in game three with Wilton going 27-25, 19-21, 15-12 to advance to the title match with the Nikes.
Mary Kate Bendlage led HTC with 33 kills and 38 digs. She also had four blocks.
Presley Myers had 22 kills and Brooke Mueller had 15 kills while going a perfect 37-37 serving with seven aces.
Anna Bendlage had 76 assists in the tourney.
Central Lee lost to Wilton and HTC both in two sets and then swept Columbus 2-0.
Makayla Morrison led in kills with 16 and digs with 25.
Bailey Schwarts had nine kills and 11 digs, while Alix Congdon had 15 digs on the night. Taylor Jones had three blocks and Kenna Sandoval had 19 assists for the Lady Hawks.
At Saturday's tournament at Bondurant Farrar the Crusaders downed Boone 21-11, 21-13, Fort Madison 21-10, 21-10 and Red Oak 21-16, 21-8 all in the last three matches of the bracket play.
In the morning pool play, HTC fell to North Polk 15-21, 21-18, 10-15, Pella Christian 17-21, 20-22, and Wapsie 18-21, 14-21.
Bendlage had 49 kills and was 28/30 serving with two aces. Mueller had 26 kills and was 63-65 serving with nine aces on the day. Anna Bendlage had 90 assists was 34/36 werving with five aces. Teagan Snaadt had 25 digs.
CENTRAL LEE TOURNEY
The Hawks downed Burlington 21-16, 18-21, 15-10 and then defeated Durant 17-21, 21-7, 15-12. Central Lee lost to West Burlington 25-7, 25-8 and to Centerville 20-22, 18-21.
