Ninth-ranked Kemper takes 100 lb. title at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG – Hailey Kemper led the Fort Madison Lady Hounds to a fifth-place tie at the Williamsburg Invitational over the weekend.
Fort Madison finished with 117 points tied with Vinton-Shellsburg. East Buchanon won the event with 186 points followed by Independence, South Tama County, and Ottumwa.
Kemper rolled through her 100 lb. bracket racking up three falls in four matches. Her toughest match came against Iowa Valley -Marengo’s Kylie Loffer. That match went all three periods with Kemper coming away with an 8-2 decision. Kemper scored an escape from a down start in period 2 and then scored a takedown with :30 left in the period for a 3-0 lead. Loffer would get out of the situation in about 10 seconds for a two-point reversal and the period ended with Kemper up 3-2.
The Bloodhound junior 2023 state qualifier then racked up five quick points in the third period and was able to keep Loffer at bay for the 8-2 win. That moved her into the championship match with Lily Webster of Colfax-Mingo. Webster had a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, but scored a dynamic reversal at 1:07 and turned that into a pin for the title.
Kemper was ranked 9th in the state in the latest Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Assocation rankings. Webster was 8th.
Mara Smith (125 lbs.) and Chloe Sokolik (130.) both capture 3rd place in their respective brackets. Smith fell to Central DeWitt’s Grace Patterson in the semfinals despite leading in the first period 3-2 after an escape in the final :40 seconds of the first period. Smith chose to start down in the second period and suffered a pin :22 seconds into the period. The loss moved her into consolation wrestling where she pinned Arlo Steck in a busy match at 3:01. The two were tied after 1, both scoring near falls and takedowns in the first minute of action. Smith would then pin West Delaware’s Anna O’Rear in :56 to nail the 3rd place finish.
Sokolik got a first round bye at 130 lbs. and then fell to Independence’s 7th-ranked Havana Griffith by fall with nine seconds left in the first period of the semis. Sokolik scored three points on an escape and a takedown before Griffith regained control. The senior got a medical forfeit in her first round of consolation wrestling and then knocked off Olivia Schminke of Vinton Shellsburg by fall at 1:42 and then recorded a fall over Harper Johnson of Liberty in just 25 seconds to put her in the third place rematch with Griffith. Griffith scored an early takedown, but Sokolik scored the reversal after 1:20 of wrestling and converted the reversal into a pin 10 seconds later.
Emma Berry finished 4th at 105 lbs. and the Hounds got a 5th-place finish from Kat DiPrima at 135 lbs.
