New London catches up to Hawks in SEISC win

Central Lee surrenders two-run lead in bottom of sixth

NEW LONDON – Central Lee outhit New London Tuesday night 8 to 4, but fell 11-9 after suffering five errors in SEI Superconference baseball action.
The Hawks (2-2, 5-3) opened the game with two runs – one on an RBI double to center by Bo Herdrich, and the other on a Tiger infield error that allowed Brett Cook to score. They would add a run in the second, but then New London would strike back with five runs in the bottom of the third.
Blake Davis got into some trouble in the third, walking five of the first seven New London hitters to force in two runs and keep the bases loaded. He got Gage Burden to fan for the second out, but then another walk forced in another run followed by an error in left on a flyball that allowed two more runs to come in before Davis could retire the side on a pop fly.
New London would put up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-3 lead.
The Hawks would then right the ship in the fifth, putting up five of their own for an 8-7 lead.
Zach Manwill opened the frame with a single to third. Herdrich wore a pitch before Kayden Calfee popped out to short for the first out. Chase Johnson would work a one-out walk and then junior Hunter Edlin drove a double to center, scoring Manwill and Cook, and moving Johnson to third. Senior Kayden Ames would follow with a two-RBI single to center, scoring Johnson and Ward Fraise, courtesy running for Edlin. Gage Van Ausdall would then work a base on balls before Cory Jones slapped a double to right scoring Ames.
New London would retire the next two hitters to end the rally and strand two base runners, with the Hawks retaking the lead.
Edlin would go unscathed in the bottom of the fifth and Central Lee would add a run in the top of the sixth when Calfee, who reached on a walk and swiped second, would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch for a 9-7 lead.
New London started quick in the bottom of the sixth with a double, a walk, and an infield error that allowed a run. New London’s Michael Raines would single to load the bases with no outs. Edlin would get a strikeout on the next hitter, but a passed ball allowed New London to tie the game at 9.
The Tigers’ Tate Welcher singled to center scoring two more runs in what would turn out to be the game winner. New London wouldn’t score again, but Central Lee went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th to end the game.
The Hawks shutout Winfield-Mt.Union on Monday 11-0. Herdrich drove in four runs in the game on a grand slam over the left field fence. Herdrich, Johnson, and Van Ausdall combined for a two-hitter striking out nine and walking three. Davis and Manwill both had two-hit games for Central Lee. Van Ausdall and Jones each drove in two runs.
Central Lee takes on Van Buren Thursday at home in a 5:30 start.
