HTC girls hold New London to just 18

Crusaders offense wakes up in SEISC win

NEW LONDON - The Holy Trinity girls basketball team probably doesn't have a team goal of holding opponents under 20 points a game, but they did just that Friday night.

The Crusaders dominated New London for four quarters in a 51-18 win in SEI Superconference South action at New London.

Teagan Snaadt led all scorers with 18, mostly coming in transition as the pace of the game favored Holy Trinity.

Snaadt and freshman Presley Myers came out strong for the Crusaders scoring the first eight points, while HTC allowed the Tigers just two points in the early going.

The Tigers didn't get their second bucket until there was just 4:58 left in the first half, which is all they would get in the half as HTC raced out to a 29-4 lead.

Snaadt had 11 and Myers had six for the Crusaders in the first two periods.

The Tigers' Sophie Mallot heated up a bit in the second half with a couple three-pointers on the way to her team-high eight points. Mylee Miller had six in the second half for New London.

Despite HTC's defense and rebounding, it was the offense that impressed Head Coach Tony Johnson.

"We worked on (defense) a little bit this week, but I think tonight I was more impressed with the offense because we kept the ball moving and we kept the bodies moving," Johnson said.

"We worked on that for an hour and a half last night to keep things moving because we tend to like to sit and watch a little bit."

The Crusaders are still playing without starters Natalie Randolph and Mary Kate Bendlage, both out with knee injuries.

Despite the loss of offense from Randolph and Bendlage, Johnson said Holy Trinity is playing well and competing each night.

"Nobody's even brought it up. Nobody's saying what could've been. Next man up is all we can do," he said.

One of those next players up is freshman Presley Myers who finished with 12 points.

Johnson said Myers, who made a name for herself helping the Crusaders to the state volleyball tournament as an inside hitter, is coming along quickly on the hardcourt as well.

"From week 1 to now she's come leaps and bounds. She's getting accustomed to the speed and physicality of it. In the post it can get pretty rugged down there," Johnson said.

But Johnson said the Crusaders don't have any quit in them.

"Keep playing. They didn't quit so I'm not gonna quit on them.  That's the biggest thing with them. They never quit playing hard and that's all you can ask for," he said.

New London played a better third quarter, keeping pace with the Crusaders being outscored just 10-8. But HTC pulled away behind Kayla Box's four points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

HTC (2-3, 1-3) hosts Class 1A No. 13 Burlington Notre Dame (5-0, 4-0) on Tuesday.
