Hounds struggle through Keen Invitational

INDEPENDENCE – Logan Pennock led an embattled Fort Madison wrestling squad over the weekend at the Cliff Keen Invitational at Independence.
Pennock finished 5th at 132 lbs. and Nolan Riddle finished 6th at 157 lbs. for the best finishes over the weekend.
Pennock was seeded 5th to start the tournament and won his first three matches on Friday and then fell to Carlisle’s No. 4 seed Ryan Ryder 14-4 in the opening round of Saturday’s Championship bracket. He would come back with a pin of No. 8 Kameron Kremer of Independence and then fall to No. 3 Tayten Coufal of Alburnett by fall in the first period. That loss put Pennock in the 5th place match where he beat No. 7 seed Isaac Lomas of Waterloo East with a pin at 3:41.
Riddle also got off to a good start Friday winning his first three matches. Riddle finished where he started with the No. 6 seed capturing sixth place. The senior Bloodhound dropped his first match in Saturday’s bracket by a 6-0 decision to the 3-seed Syler Zdanczewicz of Fennimore, Wis. He then advanced with a medical forfeit by Reece Klostermann of Alburnett. His first loss in consolation came at the hands of 4th-seeded Jaxon Miller of Carlisle in a 10-1 major decision, which landed him in a rematch with Zdanczewicz, this time suffering a pin at 1:33 for sixth place.
Other Hounds to make it into the championship bracket on Saturday included Joe Hartman at 165 and Cory Arnett at 285.
Hartman, seeded 18th,  lost in opening round wrestling Saturday by fall 1:45 into the second period. He then scored a quick :55 pin of Gage Wooldrik of Denver, Iowa, but he would lose his next two matches in consolation, both by fall, to finish in 14th overall, up four places from his Saturday seeding.
Arnett was seeded 11th in Saturday wrestling and won his first match with a 1:37 pin over Clear Creek-Amana’s Vinnie Keller. Arnett then lost to Roland-Story senior Aaron Peyton by fall in the first minute of the second period. The Bloodhound then suffered a medical forfeit on the consolation side and finished 14th overall.
No. 1 seed Teague Smith wrestling at 190 suffered a medical forfeit in the first period of his first match Friday and was unable to compete the rest of the weekend.
