General election filing deadlines announced

LEE COUNTY - Lee County Auditor Denise Fraise announces that the filing period for the November 7, 2023 Combined City/School Election will begin Monday, August 28, 2023. You must file with your City Clerk if you are running for a City office or School Secretary if you are running for a School Board Member.
For those interested in running for a school board, in the:
Central Lee School District you must reside in one of the three districts that are up for re-election but candidates are voted on At-large; Director District 1, Director District, Director District 3
Fort Madison School District voting is done At-large and four seats will be on the ballot.
Keokuk School District voting is done At-large four seats will be on the ballot.
In city elections, Donnellson voting is done At-large with two council seats on the ballot.
Fort Madison Council Members must reside in the Ward they are running for and the Mayor is elected at-large.
Nomination Petitions and Candidate Affidavits are available at the Fort Madison City Clerk’s Office, 811 Avenue E, Fort Madison.
The city's offices and length of terms include:
Mayor - 2-year term;  1st Ward Councilperson 4-Year term; 2nd Ward Council Member - Remainder of 4-Year term; 3rd Ward Councilperson - 4-Year term; 5th Ward Councilperson - 4-Year term; Councilperson At-Large - 4-year term.
Nomination Petitions and Candidate Affidavits must be turned into the City Clerk at Fort Madison City Hall, 811 Avenue E, Fort Madison. 
The earliest date to file a Nomination Petition and Candidate Affidavit will be Monday, August 28, 2023.  The last day to file papers will Thursday, September 21, 2023.  The City Clerk’s office will be open until 5:00 P.M. on September 21st in order to accept petitions.
A candidate must be 18 years of age when his or her Nomination Petition is filed.  Candidates must live within the Ward they represent in the City of Fort Madison.

Franklin voting is done at-large with the Mayor's seat and five council seats on the ballot.
Houghton voting is done at-large withe Mayor's seat and five council member seats on the ballot.
Keokuk Council Members must reside in the Ward they are running for with the following seats up for election: Mayor, 2nd Ward, 4th Ward, 5th Ward, 6th Ward and two At-Large seats.
Montrose voting is done At-large with the Mayor and two council seats up for grabs.
It is recommended that Candidates obtain more than the required number of signatures on their Petitions.  This will guard against possible unacceptable signatures causing the Petitions to be invalid.
