County veterans looking for volunteer drivers

Lee County Commission needs help getting vets to clinics

Posted

LEE COUNTY - The Lee County Commission of Veterans Affairs is currently, and always, looking for volunteer drivers to take Veterans to scheduled appointments at VA Medical Centers in Iowa City and, occasionally, Quincy, IL. We have the transport vehicle and keep it maintained in good condition. We do not require you to use your own vehicle for transports.

People who might like this volunteer position include, but are in no way limited to, recently retired persons, seasonal workers (ie: teachers or classroom associates, farmers, truck drivers, etc.), veterans, empty nesters looking for a way to fill their time.

There are some requirements- being a veteran is not one of them! They do include- attending a short training, pass a background, pass a driving record check, meet the PPE/Covid (wear a mask and have been or are willing to be fully vaccinated), complete a non-invasive physical and not have any of the following medical issues: vertigo, use of medical marijuana, stroke, insulin dependent, use of oxygen, Parkinson’s, or heart issues (in the past 4 months).

As a volunteer, you have the say whether or not you are available to take a drive. If you are a person who likes order and knowing when you will drive, you can say, “I would like to only drive on Wednesdays.” We need you. Please contact Nikki Sugars at 319-372-5853.
